Portfolio Submission Guideline

Stephen Bulger Gallery views portfolio submissions once a year in a hope to find new work to represent to its clients. If you are interested in submitting a portfolio please review the following guidelines. We look at each and every portfolio submitted, but it should be noted that the gallery reviews approximately 500 portfolios for every one it accepts for representation.

Portfolio submissions will only be accepted from Tuesday, July 12th, 2016 to Friday, July 15th, 2016.

Portfolios will be available for pick up from Wednesday, July 19th, 2016 to Friday, July 22nd, 2016. We will notify you when your portfolio has been reviewed.

All submission costs (shipping, production, etc.) are the financial responsibility of the applicant and we regret that we are unable to return any material that is not accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope, return waybill or shipping account information (ie. FedEx). Please ensure that your portfolio can be easily repacked.

Before dropping off your work for consideration at the gallery, please ensure that it fulfills the following specifications:

  • A cover letter and CV

  • Your portfolio consists of 10-20 exhibition-quality prints (i.e., as they would appear in a show, not mini-lab prints, not work prints etc.). If your exhibition prints are larger than 20 x 24 inches, we request that you submit ONLY 1 exhibition quality print, so that we have a frame of reference when looking through the remainder of your portfolio (which, in these instances, can be “portfolio sized” prints or digital images on a CD). We look at exhibition-quality prints to evaluate your print making expertise. We do not need to see pristine prints for this evaluation and are happy to see an Artist Proof that may already have some handling marks present. We will handle your work with the utmost care, but assume no responsibility for any damage to your portfolio.

  • The work contains a coherent theme (not a “best of” portfolio)

  • The prints are loose or matted (not framed), and safely housed in a proper storage container. Please ensure that your portfolio can be easily repacked.
  • Your name, address, telephone number and e-mail are clearly displayed and return postage, etc. is included, if necessary.

  • You should have a good idea of the material that this gallery displays regularly. Please use our website to familiarize yourself with the types of artists and works that we represent to determine if your work is suited to the gallery.

If you have submitted your portfolio in the hopes that we will provide a constructive review of your work, we regret that we are unable to do so. If this is what you are looking for, we strongly recommend participating in the various portfolio review sessions that different organizations and festivals such as CONTACT, Gallery 44, Houston FOTOFEST, or Rhubarb offer. These events usually provide you with 20 minutes of personal time with a cross section of photography professionals. Stephen Bulger has participated in many such reviews and can personally vouch for their usefulness. We are looking for new work that we believe we can find a market for. Due to the volume of work received annually, and because our priority is attending to the careers of artists we already represent, we simply cannot offer constructive criticism to all who submit their work for our review.

Please note:

  • E-mail attachments are not opened. Slides and CD are not viewed, unless accompanied by at least 1 large exhibition print.

  • The gallery is not responsible for any damages that your submission may incur during shipping or transport.

  • Every attempt will be made in the safe handling of your submission, but the gallery assumes no responsibility for any damage that may occur through handling. When possible, please provide gallery proof prints in case of damage.

  • We will notify each applicant after the review process has been completed and when the best time is for pick-up or return shipping. We also recommend calling in advance, before coming in for pick-up.
