Portfolio Submission Guideline

Stephen Bulger Gallery views portfolio submissions once a year. If you are interested in submitting a portfolio please review the following guidelines.

Portfolio submissions will only be accepted from Tuesday August 7th to Friday August 10th, 2012.

Portfolios must be picked-up from Wednesday, August 15th to Friday, August 17th, 2012. We recommend that you call ahead to ensure that your portfolio has been viewed before coming to the gallery.

All submission costs (shipping, production, etc.) are the financial responsibility of the applicant and we regret that we are unable to return any material that is not accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope. Please ensure that your portfolio can be easily repacked.

Before dropping off your work for consideration at the gallery, please ensure that it fulfills the following specifications:

• Your portfolio consists of 10-20 exhibition-quality prints (i.e., as they would appear in a show, not mini-lab prints, not work prints etc.). If your exhibition prints are larger than 20 x 24 inches, we request that you submit 1 finished print, so that we have a frame of reference when looking through the remainder of your portfolio (which, in these instances, can be “portfolio sized” prints).
• The work contains a coherent theme (not a “best of” portfolio)
• The prints are loose or matted (not framed), and safely housed in a proper storage container
• Your name, address, telephone number, and e-mail are clearly displayed, and return postage, etc. is included, if necessary.
• You should have a good idea of the material that this gallery displays regularly. Please use our website to familiarize yourself with the types of artists and works that we represent.

If you have submitted your portfolio in the hopes that we will provide a constructive review of your work, we regret that we are unable to. If this is what you are looking for, we strongly recommend participating in the various portfolio review sessions that different organizations and festivals such as CONTACT, Gallery 44, Houston FOTOFEST, or Rhubarb offer. These events usually provide you with 20 minutes of personal time with a cross section of photography professionals. I have participated in many such reviews and can personally vouch for their usefulness. We are looking for new work that we believe we can find a market for, due to the volume of work received annually, and because our priority is attending to the careers of artists we already represent, we simply cannot offer constructive criticism to all who submit their work for our review.

Please note:

• E-mail attachments are not opened. Slides and CD are not viewed, unless accompanied by at least 1 large exhibition print.

• The gallery is not responsible for any damages that your submission may incur during shipping or transport.

• Every attempt will be made in the safe handling of your submission, but the gallery assumes no responsibility for any damage that may occur through handling.

• We will notify each applicant after the review process has been completed and when the best time is for pick-up or return shipping. We also recommend calling in advance, before coming in for pick-up.
