Jaret Belliveau

(b. 1981, Moncton, Canada)


Jaret Belliveau graduated from NSCAD University in April 2006 with a BFA, majoring in photography and a minor in film history. Jaret’s first major photographic documentary, Dominion Street,began simply as a document of his family’s daily lives. Eight months into this project his mother was diagnosed with cancer. Dominion Street attempts to describe the internal workings of his family before, during, and after his mother’s battle with cancer.

 

In 2005, Jaret’s work was selected by the Musee de L’Elysee in Lausanne, Switzerland, as one of the top 50 upcoming photographers in the world for an exhibition entitled “reGeneration: 50 Photographers of Tomorrow”. Accompanying this traveling exhibition, a book of the same name was published by Thames & Hudson and Aperture. The book has been published in English, French, Korean and Japanese. The regeneration exhibition has also been exhibited widely around

the world. Jaret’s documentary work has also been published in Carte Blanche, Vol. 1, Flash Forward - Emerging Photographers 2006 and 2007 published by the Magenta foundation. His photographs are housed in permanent National and International collections.

 

Jaret’s editorial clients consist of The Sunday Times Magazine, The Telegraph, Maclean’s, The Walrus, AARP, The Globe and Mail, and Adbusters.

 

Jaret has also directed two feature length documentary films. His first Highway Gospel was officially selected to screen at Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival, DOXA, Atlantic Film Festival, Whistler Film Festival and Festival do Rio. Highway Gospel is distributed by Kinosmith in Canada. His second film Kung Fu Elliot was awarded the Grand Jury Prize for Feature Length Documentary Film at the Slamdance Film Festival. The film was officially selected to screen at Sarasota Film Festival, Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival, Fantasia, Fantastic Fest, Awesome Fest, New Zealand International Film Festival. Kung Fu Elliot is distributed by Mongrel Media in Canada and Cargo Film & Releasing internationally.
