The Stephen Bulger Gallery is pleased to present a book signing and exhibition in the Reading Room gallery with Sunil Gupta. The event coincides with Gupta’s current exhibition at the Ryerson Image Centre entitled “From Here to Eternity. Sunil Gupta, A Retrospective”.

Gupta’s photographic practice highlights issues of race, migration, and queer identity through autobiographic narratives as a gay man of colour living with HIV. Born in India and having lived in Canada, the US and England, Gupta continuously explores intersecting facets of his identity through his career-spanning body of work. Featured in the Reading Room gallery are select photographs from the series “Gay Memorials”, “Trespass 3” and “Homelands”. “Gay Memorials” poignantly commemorates victims of homophobic hate crimes, while “Trespass 3” juxtaposes photographs of travel and transport against images about South Asian life, both in England and India that Gupta feels has some relation to one another. In “Homelands”, Gupta creates diptychs that explore the connections between the diverse landscapes that he has an affinity with. He confronts these landscapes both as an artist who is HIV-positive and as a man whose life in the West differs greatly from that which he would have lived had he never left India.

Gupta’s published works include London 82 (Stanley Barker, 2021), Lovers: Ten Years On (Stanley Barker, 2020), Christopher Street, 1976 (Stanley Barker, 2018), Delhi: Communities of Belonging (The New Press, 2016), Queer: Sunil Gupta (Prestel/Vadehra Art Gallery, 2011), Wish You Were Here: Memories of a Gay Life (Yoda Press, 2008) and Pictures From Here (Chris Boot Ltd., 2003).
